Auto Insurance Facts

You will likely be renting your vehicle online. You need to pick your dates, your location, and the type of vehicle you need. The next thing they will be asking is about different kinds of insurance coverage. Do you want additional liability insurance, lost articles insurance, or CDW coverage? Confused? Most people are.

Whether your auto insurance provides enough protection depends on what coverage you actually have. A basic auto insurance policy will only provide liability coverage if you have a basic auto insurance policy. You will need to have something else to cover the actual rental vehicle. If you have collision and comprehensive coverage on your personal vehicle, your coverage will most likely cover you in a rental vehicle. To be sure, call your insurance agent to double-check.

If you are comfortable with the liability coverage you have on your auto policy, it will be adequate for a rental, and if you have a home, condo, or renters insurance, it will cover anything you bring with you against theft.

So, basically, if you have a full coverage policy on your vehicle, it should be what you need when you rent a car. If not, check with your credit card first to see if it provides rental car coverage and if all else fails, the CDW protection the rental car company sells will take all the liability away from you.
